What do you think of this question? I say of course they should have access to their children's grades. How else are they to know how they are doing gradewise besides having to call and bother the teachers on a daily basis.
Considering that we all would rather have the parent who is too involved as opposed to the one who doesn't care a lick for their child's education. . .of course parents should have this access! I would rather have a conversation with a parent of "why is my little Johnny getting a D -- and why haven't you called me about that?!?" than "why did my little Johnny get a D on his report card?" I can't keep tabs on all 100+ of my students and make all the calls home I'd like to. But a parent can keep track of their children and initiate conversations where need be.
ReplyDeleteI e-mailed a parent the other day as a heads-up on their son's lack of effort in class. Before I did this, I talked with the student. He said that his parents had seen the grade already and talked with him about it the day before. I e-mailed them and even saw the mom at a dance that night, and no conversation had to happen between us because it had already taken place between her and her son. That made my job a lot easier.
Yes, parents should have assess to their child grades. I think people want childreen to be grown too fast. How else would parents know whats going on.
ReplyDeleteI agree that parents should have access to students grades. My school uses Power School, a program that contains grades that parents are able to access. I like this a lot. It takes some pressure off of teachers. Parents should not have an excuse not to know how their child is doing. If they do not have the Internet, well the public library allows one to use it for free. Where there is a will there is a way.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that parents should have access to students' grades. For one, and I am big on this, it takes away a lot of excuses. But, unfortunately, I find that many parents don't use this access to look, and I find this completely sad for these kids.
ReplyDeleteThere is a group of teachers at my school who argue that by giving parents access to everything we are enabling our kids to not have to be responsible for themselves. While I can somewhat see their point, I can't agree with it. Yes, students need to learn to be more responsible for themselves, but they also need their parents taking over when they fall short on this expectation.
Of course they should! Hopefully they are checking it weekly to help their child be successful. In middle school, many kids are finding themselves. They begin thinking that being smart or always handing in your assignments is "un-cool". It is important for parents to check grades to be sure they are completing assignments (making sure to praise them with the good they see, too!).
ReplyDeleteI say, "Absolutely!" Parents should be able to view all of their children's grades. This way there are absolutely no surprises when grades are distributed on report cards. Parents can see what areas of study their children need additional work/help or assignments that are missing. They may also see what the children are working on, that has not been presented to them at home.
ReplyDeleteMany parents feel that they keep on top of what their children are doing in school. However, in some cases, a good number of these same parents soon find out otherwise when grades come around.
I feel that parents should have access to their child's grades. In the first district I worked in, parents had access but never used it. They would claim that they had no idea what their children were doing in school. That gave me quite a bit of insight as to why the students were the way they were. However, in the district I work in now, students and parent are always checking grades and assignments through ParentWeb. It is a wonderful tool for parents and students to establish what type of progress the kids are making and when they screw up.
