Technology in the Elementary School
Does everyone have a technology teacher in their school or do you have to teach technology yourself? Our school does not have a technology teacher, therefore, all classroom teachers are responsible to incorporate technology in their classroom themselves. For some it is not an issue, for the older teachers who do not like change, they really struggle with it. What is your input

My situation is unique as my 'school' consists of only 2 teachers. In that case, I am the 'technology guru.'
ReplyDeleteHowever, we are a part of the Intermediate School District - and we have a technology director (he is more the 'nuts and bolts' of computers...the things that go right over my head). But when it comes to ed tech, we are pretty much on our own (yet I would LOVE to be an ed tech 'coordinator' for our ISD!!!)
I teach in a community college so we are lucky enough to have an entire tech department.
ReplyDeleteI do not have a technology teacher in the building or even a computer in my classroom. Net books are all I have access to, which is not appropriate technology for 3 year olds and they are only available to check out. I have talked to our district's tech department and they will not give me a desk top or even a few full size laptops to keep in my classroom. I also am not allowed to bring in my own desk top. I am feeling very upset that consideration is not being given to the early childhood programs when it comes to technology. I have very young special education students that would benefit very much from some technology in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteWe do not have a technology teacher either. I work in a small district where the the entire district is housed basically in one building. We are fortunate enough to have two labs and almost a classroom sized set of computers in the library for our use. The drive to incorporate technology as not as strong as the one to get our students to graduate and for us to achieve AYP. I was laid off from a district where I had just gotten a SMARTboard in my classroom. Really wished I could have backed that into some of my cardboard boxes when I left!
ReplyDeleteWe do not have a technology teacher either (at our high school - or elementary buildings). Every teacher is expected to integrate technology into their lessons, etc -- however, there is not a lot of technology to go around. We do not have much that we can get our hands on and what the school does have is outdated. There are a handful of seasoned teachers that think technology is "fluff". One in particular complains that there are too many steps to turn a computer on. Oh my!
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, I think that many teachers (that are not comfortable or familiar with technology) are also in fear of it in some way. If only every school had the $bucks$ to supply classrooms with the proper resources and teachers with the proper training -- then maybe we'd be getting somewhere. I'm saddened to think that that day is far off (at least in our district).
