I realize that most of you do not remember this and were probably not even born yet, but the images of the challenger blowing up are still very vivid in my head. I remember watching as the Challenger took off, and feeling the excitement for the first teacher to ever enter space. I remember thinking about all the school children who were watching, especially Christa McAuliffe's first grade class. As everyone watched in awe, then the Challenger exploded right in front of our eyes. It was horrifying, to think of the lives that were lost and the trauma of all the children who were watching that day in their classrooms. The diverse group of astronauts will always be remembered. Read and watch this heart wrenching video.
I will not forget that day. I remember how excited they all were to make the journey. I cannot get over how devastating the whole incident was and saying to myself, "What an awful way to die." I remember praying for the victims and their families. It is bad enough to have it happen at all, but with technology so advanced, it happened on national tv.
ReplyDeleteI teach an applied science class and a recent project involved the students researching a technological system failure. One group chose to look at NASA failures. None of the students had even been born at the time of the Challenger accident, but I was so pleased to see how interested the had become in the topic. There was so much information about why and how the accident happened. They incorporated video footage into their presentation for the class to see. Their presentation led to a great discussion about why NASA chose to go ahead with the mission and where they have gone since then.
ReplyDeleteIt was such a tradgedy. It is something I will never forget. I am just so glad that the crew will always be remembered.
